Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative offered at El Centro de la Raza

Works to re-engage youth in school and prevent students from dropping out through supportive case management. Focuses on keeping youth in school and increasing academic achievement. Case management services help youth navigate the school and court systems and access tutoring, housing, health, mental health, employment and treatment services. Case managers provide outreach and advocacy, as well as culturally and linguistically appropriate support services. Also connects high-risk youth and families to services, maintains regular contact with youth and monitors youth progress toward reaching individual academic goals.

M-F, 8am-5pm. Appointments are made individually with case managers.

Application process

Participating agencies, parents, school counselors, health clinics or social service providers make referrals by calling the Referral Coordinator.

Eligibility

Low-income youth ages 12 through 24 who are at a high risk of perpetuating or being victimized by violence. Must reside or attend school in central, southeast, and southwest Seattle. Focuses on Latino youth that have experienced at least one of the following: school suspensions, expulsion, discipline referrals, low school attendance, failing grades, behind in credits, truant or dropped out of school.

Multiservice center offers ESL classes, foreclosure counseling and a legal clinic as well as outreach, advocacy and assistance for veterans. Also operates a congregate meal for older adults, a food pantry, a bilingual child care/preschool program, maternal health and early perinatal care, and a before- and after-school program with homework help and tutoring. Some services focus on serving the Latino community or Beacon Hill residents. Provides case management to high-risk youth to increase school involvement and prevent violence and criminal activity.
