We teach young people with visual disabilities how to be productive, independent, and successful. Learn about the youth services we offer from childhood through young adulthood. DSB supports young people ages 21 and under with vision loss by preparing them for successful futures by providing workshops, programs, and activities provide geared towards teaching age-appropriate skills of blindness, self-advocacy, orientation and mobility, and educational and career exploration.

Children, Youth, and Families Services offered by Washington State Department of Services for the Blind in Spokane

Provides services towards building the foundation of a productive, independent and successful childhood, youth, and adulthood. Helps students and their families think about and plan for life after high school.

Supervised, structured programs that offer a wide range of outpatient services which may be coordinated by a case manager and may include individual and group counseling, 12-step meetings, social and recreational activities, educational and vocational services, life skills training, primary health care, perinatal health care, a program for family members, relapse prevention services, a continuing care program and supportive services (such as child care, transportation and parenting skills development) for individuals who have problems related to excessive use of alcohol and/or use of other drugs and need access to treatment to maintain their individual recovery plans but do not require the intensity of a day treatment program or 24-hour hospital care. Participants attend the program on a regularly scheduled basis at least once a month but usually more frequently depending on their individual needs. Intensive outpatient programs are usually available three or four days per week for three or four hours per day.

Comprehensive Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Programs that provide support for children with disabilities who are moving from one kind of program setting or service provision system to another. The common transition points include transitions from health services to education or vice versa, from preschool to kindergarten, from elementary school to middle school, from secondary school to adult life and from more restrictive to less restrictive settings.

Transition Services for Students With Disabilities

Programs staffed by on-campus career counselors who provide advice and guidance that helps high school students, undergraduates, graduate students and sometimes alumni explore career options and make good career-related decisions. Career counselors support young people in gaining a better understanding of what really matters to them and, in many settings, can work with academic counselors to ensure that the course of studies they select supports their long range career goals. Career counselors can help clients develop strategies and skills in exploring career options, evaluate career values and create a career path; and later, many can help students who are ready to launch a career identify and apply for jobs, network, interview and create a balance between work and a personal life.

Student Career Counseling

Programs that administer tests which measure an individual's skills, abilities, interests, personality traits and other attributes for success in different occupational areas or specific positions. Also included are programs that allow people to "try out" jobs in the community for short periods of time to determine whether there is a fit and, in the case of people with disabilities, to determine the type of supports the individual might require to succeed if hired for that type of job.
