Provides adult basic education classes in reading, writing, and math to serve the needs of the adult student, 18 years or older, who lacks these basic skills. Each person is tested and diagnosed for reading, writing, and math levels and is provided with appropriate materials for instruction. Also provides English Language Acquisition (ELA) and General Education Degree Program (GED) for those that did not complete their high school education.

Adult Basic Education offered at Columbia Basin College

Provides adult basic education classes (reading, writing, and math), English Language Acquisition (ELA)classes, and General Education Degree Program (GED) classes.

Programs that administer tests to assess the English proficiency skills of adults for whom English is a second language for the purpose of placing learners in appropriate instructional levels and measuring their ongoing progress.  Assessment tools include commercially available tests that assess English literacy (reading and writing), listening and speaking skills, as well as classroom-based tools such as surveys, interviews, checklists, observation measures, teacher-developed tests, learner self-assessment and portfolios or other performance samples.

Adult English as a Second Language Tests

Programs that provide individualized or small group instruction for people who need assistance in learning one or more components of a prescribed curriculum. Tutoring usually supplements a regular school program and may be provided at school, in the person's home or at a community agency site.

Subject Tutoring

Programs, usually offered by community adult schools or as evening classes at local high schools, that provide instruction in fundamental learning skills for adults who have never attended school or have interrupted formal schooling and need to raise their level of education to increase their self-confidence and/or prepare for an occupation.  Emphasis is placed on basic reading, language and mathematics to strengthen functional skills in communication, computation and personal-social interaction.

Adult Basic Education

Programs that offer opportunities for non-English-speaking and limited-English-speaking adults to learn listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on developing the level of communication competence that is essential for adults who are living in a setting in which English is the primary language. Also included are programs that provide English language instruction for younger people.
