Pre-Abortion Counseling

Programs that teach skills that enable parents to deal constructively and consistently with a broad spectrum of child rearing problems which may include sibling rivalry; school behavior and performance; poor self-esteem; shyness; drug use; sexual promiscuity; and the whole range of negative, acting-out behaviors including whining, temper tantrums, disobedience, insolence and destructiveness. Some parenting skills development programs utilize a step-by-step approach for managing specific problems and may incorporate application at home of techniques that were discussed and practiced in the classroom setting. Other programs may offer participatory family workshops which provide opportunities for parents and children to learn and practice methods for dealing with one another under the guidance of a trained facilitator. Most training programs teach the parent a particular way of talking and relating to their children that reinforces positive behaviors and communication and decreases negative behaviors while supporting the development of a relationship that is built on fairness, mutual caring and respect.

Parenting Skills Classes

Programs that offer training which focuses on the knowledge and skills an individual may need to live independently or make a successful transition to independent living. Participants may include runaway youth who are living on their own, youth who because of age can no longer be maintained in foster care, new widows, victims of domestic abuse, people who have previously been homeless, and others who have lived in an environment in which decision making and responsibilities of daily living have been handled by another as well as people currently living independently who want to be more effective. Training may address job search and retention, money management, insurance, taxes, rental agreements, vehicle purchase, nutrition, home management, health care, legal emancipation for teens and other similar topics.

Life Skills Education

Programs that accept new or secondhand clothing and layettes for infants and young children, repair the items if necessary, and keep the clothing for use in their own programs, donate it to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell it to raise money for agency programs.

Baby Clothing Donation Programs

Programs that provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for people who have contracted gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes or another infection that is transmitted by sexual contact. Treatment usually involves an investigation of recent contacts of people who have been infected to stop the spread of the infection .

Sexually Transmitted Infection Treatment

Programs that provide individual, conjoint or group counseling for individuals who have terminated their pregnancies and, if appropriate, for their significant others, which focuses on their feelings about the abortion and its effect on their lives.

Postabortion Counseling

Programs that encourage individuals whose plans for their pregnancies are uncertain to consider alternatives to abortion including relinquishing the children for adoption or raising the children themselves.

Pro-Life Pregnancy Counseling

Programs that identify individuals who have contracted gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes or other infections that are spread by sexual contact and diagnose their conditions. The procedure includes visual examinations, blood tests and analyses of discharge or samples taken from lesions.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening

Provides a wide range of free or low-cost sexual and reproductive health care service including birth control, emergency contraception, annual gynecological exams, colposcopy, LEEP procedures, and breast exams. Sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, HIV testing, blood herpes testing, testing for UTI infections and HPV immunizations services available. Programs that help pregnant individuals become aware of their alternatives including abortion, evaluate their options, and reach decisions that are appropriate for their individual situations. Counseling is generally also available for significant others, upon request.

Pro-Choice Pregnancy Counseling

Programs that provide inoculations which provide some measure of protection against the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection some strains of which have been shown to be a major cause of cervical cancer. HPV has also been linked to cancer of the anus, vulva, vagina and some cancers of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat that includes the soft palate, the base of the tongue and the tonsils). Some studies indicate that it may also be a risk factor for cancer of the penis.

HPV Immunizations

Programs that provide a comprehensive overview of available birth control methods including information about fertility cycles, natural family planning, contraception and sterilization, and help people evaluate their options and select the method that bests suits their needs.

Birth Control Counseling

Programs that provide pregnancy termination services for individuals who have decided not to follow through with their pregnancy.

Abortions

Programs that provide comprehensive primary and specialized care which focus on health issues experienced by women. Services are provided in an emotionally supportive and safe environment, and typically include health education, wellness programs and assistance navigating services. Specialized care available at women's health centers vary and may include reproductive and sexual health diagnostic and treatment services, access to abortion, cancer screening, and/or other public education programs focused on women's health.

Women's Health Centers

Programs that prescribe and/or supply birth control pills which are taken within 72-120 hours of having sexual intercourse to prevent an unintended pregnancy. Emergency contraception may be provided in the form of Plan B (2 pills), a large dose of regular birth control pills (two or four pills twice during a 12 hour period) or through insertion of a copper IUD.

Emergency Contraception

Programs that use a colposcope to examine vaginal and cervical tissue at specific sites of abnormal epithelium for biopsy in patients with abnormal Pap smears.

Colposcopy

Programs that utilize laboratory procedures to determine whether an individual is pregnant or which provide access to devices for establishing pregnancy that people can use at home.

Pregnancy Testing

Programs that perform vasectomies for men or tubal ligations for women who want a permanent means of preventing pregnancy.

Sterilization

Programs that offer HIV tests which are used to identify individuals who have been infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and are at risk for developing AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) or which are used to measure progression of the disease in people known to be infected. The most common HIV screening test is the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) which most frequently uses peripheral blood drawn from the arm or a finger as a sample, but can also be conducted using serum, oral fluids or urine. Repeatedly reactive EIA tests are confirmed using the Western blot or the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). The most common test that is used to measure disease progression is the PCR (polymeraise chain reaction) or viral load test. Many programs that provide HIV testing also provide pre-testing and post-test counseling which includes information about AIDS/HIV, reducing risks for HIV transmission, emotional support to help the individual deal with the testing process and test results, and information about and referral to other AIDS-related services.
