Nephrology

Programs that help people of all ages who have juvenile or adult diabetes understand and manage their illness. Services may include screening programs for early identification of the condition and associated complications; establishment of a treatment regimen; patient education; and self-management skills development assistance which may focus on use of insulin and drugs to control blood sugar levels, blood glucose monitoring, dietary management in different environments (at home, at work, in school, while dining out), menu planning, the role of exercise in relation to food intake, hygienic measures such as foot care and ways to reduce the likelihood of diabetes-related complications which may include heart disease, kidney failure, amputation, nerve damage and blindness. Sleep Disorders Clinics

Urologists are trained to deal with prostate infections, obstruction, and cancer; incontinence; urinary tract infections including kidney and bladder infections; kidney stones; urologic cancer; and male impotence and infertility.

Urology

Programs that test an asymptomatic individual's blood and tissue to determine the presence of a particular gene or chromosome variation which may lead to the birth of a child with a particular disease or disability; or which determine the presence of specific genes or chromosome variations which predispose the person to a particular disease or disability later in life. Carrier testing is done for a number of conditions including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia (Cooley's anemia), Tay-Sachs disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, Huntington's disease and neurofibromatosis. Predictive genetic testing is available for a number of diseases including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, melanoma and thyroid cancer.

Programs that evaluate the task performance skills of individuals who may be having difficulty engaging in self-care, work, play or leisure time activities and help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). Occupational therapy services typically include an individualized evaluation, during which the individual/family and occupational therapist agree on the person's goals; customized intervention to improve the person's ability to perform daily activities and reach their goals; and an outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met. Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.
