Endocrinology

Nephrology

Outpatient departments offer a wide range of treatment services, diagnostic tests and minor surgical procedures.

Hospital Based Outpatient Services

Programs that help people of all ages who have juvenile or adult diabetes understand and manage their illness. Services may include screening programs for early identification of the condition and associated complications; establishment of a treatment regimen; patient education; and self-management skills development assistance which may focus on use of insulin and drugs to control blood sugar levels, blood glucose monitoring, dietary management in different environments (at home, at work, in school, while dining out), menu planning, the role of exercise in relation to food intake, hygienic measures such as foot care and ways to reduce the likelihood of diabetes-related complications which may include heart disease, kidney failure, amputation, nerve damage and blindness. Included are programs that provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services on an inpatient or outpatient basis as well as less formal programs that emphasize education and may provide any combination of supportive services such as case management, assistance in obtaining needed products and services, and assistance in following the prescribed treatment regimen. Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease in which the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to allow the body to adequately metabolize sugar.

Provides medical health care, diagnosis, and treatment for adults and children in Grant County. Services include: pediatric care (including well baby and child exams); women's health care; laboratory tests and X-rays; physical examination (pre-employment, routine, and annual); minor surgery (including skin biopsies); work related injury treatment; sports physicals; blood pressure screening; immunizations; and TB screening, to name a few.

QVMC - Family Care Clinic offered at Quincy Valley Medical Center

Provides diagnosis, lab, pediatric care, womens heath care, minor surgery, and more for patients of all ages in the Grant County.

Programs that prescribe and/or supply temporary devices for preventing pregnancy which may include oral contraceptives (birth control pills), hormonal injections (Depo-Provera), intrauterine devices (IUDs), the patch, the sponge, cervical caps, condoms, foam, the vaginal ring and diaphragms.

Contraception

Programs that inoculate infants and young children to prevent them from contracting diseases to which they are particularly susceptible including diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), measles, mumps, chicken pox (varicella), rubella (German measles), whooping cough (pertussis), Hib (haemophilus influenzae type B), hepatitis B, pneumococcal infections and polio. Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for use in selected locales and for certain high-risk groups. Influenza vaccine is recommended annually for children older than six months with specific risk factors. Rotavirus vaccination (to prevent acute gastroenteritis with vomiting and severe diarrhea) is recommended during the first year of infancy. A baby should receive two or three doses depending on the brand used. Some childhood immunizations involve a series of doses at specific intervals.

Occupational Medicine

County or city-operated outpatient health care facilities that provide a broad range of diagnostic and treatment services including primary adult and pediatric care, prenatal care, dental care and specialty medicine as well as laboratory and radiological services and allied support services like nutrition and health education. Some public clinics may also offer public health services such as immunizations and communicable disease screening and treatment. Services are available on an ability-to-pay basis and target low-income and indigent residents of the community.

Public Clinics

Programs that inoculate susceptible individuals of all ages, but particularly people who are very young or very old, to prevent them from contracting any of the variant strains of influenza that are prevalent during the winter and spring. The vaccine may be administered as a "shot" that is given with a needle, usually in the arm, or in the form of a nasal mist.

Specialized care available at women's health centers vary and may include reproductive and sexual health diagnostic and treatment services, access to abortion, cancer screening, and/or other public education programs focused on women's health.

Women's Health Centers

Programs that offer the specialty in which all modalities of radiant energy are used for the detection of abnormalities throughout the body, often following the ingestion or injection of a radioactive or radiopaque substance that functions as a contrast medium. This includes but is not limited to imaging techniques and methodologies utilizing radiation emitted by x-ray tubes, radionuclides, thermagraphic devices, ultrasonic devices and radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by atoms.

Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology

Programs that provide a comprehensive overview of available birth control methods including information about fertility cycles, natural family planning, contraception and sterilization, and help people evaluate their options and select the method that bests suits their needs.

Birth Control Counseling

Programs that conduct microscopic studies of tissue samples from the cervix or vagina as a means of early cancer detection in women.

Pap Tests

Programs that provide medical care for pregnant individuals from the time of conception to the onset of labor to ensure their own physical well-being and the healthy development and birth of their child. Services generally include identification of risk factors based on age, health and/or personal and family history that may affect a pregnancy; diet and lifestyle advice; routine checkups to look for signs of problems associated with pregnancy (such as edema, preeclampsia, or gestational diabetes) and to assure that the pregnancy is progressing well; ultrasound and other forms of prenatal testing to monitor fetal development and check for possible birth defects; and general information about being pregnant, e.g., what is normal and what is cause for concern, remedies for morning sickness or sleeplessness, managing weight gain and other common issues.

Prenatal Care

Routine examinations conducted on an annual basis to assess the general physical condition of an individual and detect abnormalities. General physicals vary, but most involve a discussion of any concerns the patient may be having; checking vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and respiration rate), weight and general appearance; heart and lung exams using a stethoscope; a head and neck exam that looks at the throat, teeth and gums, ears, sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes, thyroid and carotid arteries; an abdominal exam that uses palpation to detect liver size, the presence of abdominal fluid or tenderness; a visual examination of the extremities; and breast and pelvic exams for women, testicular and prostate exams for men. Well Baby Care

Sports Medicine

Programs that are staffed by specialists who have expertise in using operative procedures to alleviate problems when a cure is unlikely using medication alone. General surgery can be used for routine procedures performed in a physician’s office, such as a vasectomy, or for more complicated operations requiring a medical team in a hospital setting such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder). Areas of the body treated by general surgery include the stomach, liver, intestines, appendix, breasts, thyroid gland, salivary glands, some arteries and veins, and the skin.

General Surgery

Programs that are staffed by specialists who have expertise in the diagnosis and treatment or management of medical and surgical conditions affecting the urinary tract. In women, this refers to the kidneys, ureter, urethra, and bladder. In men, this additionally includes the reproductive tract with penis, prostate and testicles. Urologists are trained to deal with prostate infections, obstruction, and cancer; incontinence; urinary tract infections including kidney and bladder infections; kidney stones; urologic cancer; and male impotence and infertility.

Urology

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive medical management including preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have diseases or injuries that affect the central, peripheral or autonomic nervous systems including the brain, cranial nerves, spinal cord, spinal nerves and other related structures.

Neurology

Programs that provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have any of a variety of conditions in which they have difficulty falling or staying asleep, abnormal behaviors during sleep or difficulty staying awake.

Sleep Disorders Clinics

Programs that test an asymptomatic individual's blood and tissue to determine the presence of a particular gene or chromosome variation which may lead to the birth of a child with a particular disease or disability; or which determine the presence of specific genes or chromosome variations which predispose the person to a particular disease or disability later in life. Carrier testing is done for a number of conditions including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia (Cooley's anemia), Tay-Sachs disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, Huntington's disease and neurofibromatosis. Routine health care provided by internists, pediatricians, family medicine specialists, gynecologists, obstetricians, nurse practitioners, midwives, physicians' assistants or other health care providers who serve as the first point of contact with the health care system. Services focus on the prevention and early detection of health problems through regular physical examinations, blood pressure checks, mammograms and other similar procedures as well as therapeutic services for people who do not require specialty care.

General Medical Care

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services for individuals who have diseases of or injuries to the feet. Conditions treated may include bacterial and fungal infections, skin and nail disorders, benign and cancerous tumors, congenital and acquired foot deformities and foot problems caused by illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular diseases. Treatment includes use of surgical procedures, casting or other forms of immobilization and the prescription of corrective devices, oral and locally injected medication and physical therapy.
