Provides outpatient therapy (individual, family, and group) to children, youth, and adults. Services include psychiatric evaluation and treatment, case management, dual diagnosis assessment and treatment, and substance use disorder addiction assessment and treatment. Provides an opiate substitute treatment program, including suboxone. Hosts evening and day support groups, including gender-specific groups and LGBTQ groups. 

Also has IPAs (In-Person Assisters) on staff to help clients and the general public enroll in health insurance, if needed. Volunteer opportunities available.

Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services offered at Columbia River Mental Health Services

Programs that provide individual, group or family therapy for individuals who have problems related to the excessive use of alcohol and/or use of other drugs (and/or for their families) to help them better understand the nature of the disorder and support recovery efforts.

Substance Use Disorder Counseling

Programs that offer simple tests that people who are concerned about their emotional health can take to learn more about their symptoms and ways of coping with them. Individuals generally have an opportunity to see a film and/or hear a talk about the causes, symptoms and treatment of specific mental health conditions; complete a screening questionnaire; and talk about the results with a mental health professional. People who show signs of a disorder are encouraged to seek further evaluation and, potentially, treatment. Most mental health screenings are confidential and available at no cost. Mental health screenings may also be available by telephone or online.

Mental Health Screening

Mutual support groups whose members are people living with a mental illness or condition or are generally experiencing mental or emotional difficulties, without specializing in a particular area. Families and friends may also be welcome. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and provide an opportunity for participants to share information, practical tips for daily living and encouragement about issues related to their experience.

General Mental Health Support Groups

Programs that evaluate individuals who may have a drug and/or alcohol use disorder to determine the nature and extent of the problem; and which may make a recommendation regarding treatment or may refer the individual to a specific program. The service does not include a centralized triage function within the community or a formal relationship with the courts.

General Assessment for Substance Use Disorders

Programs that provide coordinated treatment services for individuals who have a diagnosed mental illness which interferes with their functioning in a substantial way in combination with a substance use disorder that aggravates their ability to become stabilized or recover. Both psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment are provided at the same time, at the same place and by the same multidisciplinary team or a single provider trained and competent in co-occurring disorders. The approach seeks to treat the whole person instead of looking only at one issue at a time; mental illnesses and substance use disorders are seen as intertwined, not separate.

Integrated Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs that use buprenorphin to help people with an opioid use disorder abstain from or reduce their use of opioids (usually heroin or painkillers such as oxycondin or morphine). Buprenorphine produces a weaker version of effects (including euphoria and respiratory depression) that are associated with full drugs such as heroin and methadone. The effects increase with each dose until at moderate doses they level off, lowering the risk of misuse, dependency and side effects. Treatment occurs in three phases: a medically monitored start-up phase when the patient is in early stages of withdrawal; a stabilization phase after a patient has discontinued or greatly reduced their misuse of the problem drug, no longer has cravings, and experiences few, if any, side effects; and a maintenance phase when a patient is doing well on a steady dose of buprenorphine. The length of time of the maintenance phase is tailored to each patient and could be indefinite. Once an individual is stabilized, an alternative approach would be to go into a medically supervised withdrawal, which makes the transition from a physically dependent state smoother. People then can engage in further rehabilitation—with or without MAT—to prevent a possible relapse. Ideal candidates for opioid dependency treatment with buprenorphine have an opioid use disorder diagnosis, are willing to follow safety precautions for the treatment, have been cleared of any health conflicts with using the drug and have reviewed other treatment options before agreeing to buprenorphine treatment.

Buprenorphine Based MAT Programs

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs that use methadone to help people with an opioid use disorder abstain from or reduce their use of opioids. Methadone works by changing how the brain and nervous system respond to pain. It lessens the painful symptoms of opiate withdrawal and blocks the euphoric effects of opiate drugs such as heroin, morphine, and codeine, as well as semi-synthetic opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone. Methadone is offered in pill, liquid, and wafer forms and is taken once a day. Pain relief from a dose of methadone lasts about four to eight hours. Patients taking methadone to treat opioid addiction must receive the medication under the supervision of a physician. After a period of stability (based on progress and proven, consistent compliance with the medication dosage), patients may be allowed to take methadone at home between program visits. The length of time in methadone treatment varies from person to person but should be at least 12 months; and treatment must be stopped gradually to prevent withdrawal. The decision to stop treatment needs to be supervised by a physician.

Methadone Clinics

Mutual support groups whose members are individuals who have a disorder involving the use of drugs including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; provide emotional support, information and resources to help participants overcome their disorder; and may include faith-based and secular 12-step groups as well as non-12 step groups, and groups for anesthetists, pharmacists, psychologists, physicians or other health care professionals who are recovering from a drug use disorder.

Drug Use Disorder Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are individuals who have or are at risk of an alcohol use disorder. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; provide emotional support, information and resources to help participants overcome their disorder; and may include faith-based and secular 12-step groups as well as non-12 step groups, and groups for anesthetists, pharmacists, psychologists, physicians or other health care professionals who are recovering from an alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol Use Disorder Support Groups

Programs that provide emotional support, information and guidance in a variety of settings for individuals who have a disability; who are concerned about or have any of a variety of illnesses, including those that may ultimately be fatal; or who have experienced the disabling or disfiguring effects of an illness, injury or surgery. The counseling may deal with the realities of having a disability or being ill, coping with their illness/disability, life adjustments required by their situation, and helping them evaluate their alternatives and make personal choices that will maximize their ability to function independently. Included are programs that provide counseling for individuals who have a family history of a particular health condition or disability and need assistance in coping with the emotional problems that are associated with having or being at risk for developing the condition.

Health/Disability Related Counseling

Supervised, structured programs that offer a wide range of outpatient services which may be coordinated by a case manager and may include individual and group counseling, 12-step meetings, social and recreational activities, educational and vocational services, life skills training, primary health care, perinatal health care, a program for family members, relapse prevention services, a continuing care program and supportive services (such as child care, transportation and parenting skills development) for individuals who have problems related to excessive use of alcohol and/or use of other drugs and need access to treatment to maintain their individual recovery plans but do not require the intensity of a day treatment program or 24-hour hospital care. Participants attend the program on a regularly scheduled basis at least once a month but usually more frequently depending on their individual needs. Intensive outpatient programs are usually available three or four days per week for three or four hours per day.

Comprehensive Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Programs that integrate medication assisted treatment (MAT) for people with opioid use disorders into primary care settings as a way to expand access to appropriate prevention, treatment, recovery and wellness services for this condition. The goal of these programs is to help clients get a full continuum of care incorporating their primary medical and mental health providers as part of the larger substance use disorder treatment plan under a single program while still providing MAT services. Common components of existing care models include pharmacotherapy with buprenorphine or naltrexone, provider and community education, coordination and integration of opioid use disorder treatment with other medical and psychological needs, and psychosocial services and interventions. Models vary in how each component is implemented.

Integrated Care for Opioid Use Disorders

A 12-step support program for families and friends of individuals with drug, alcohol, or related behavioral issues. Support group meetings are available both in person and online depending on the area. Audio and video recordings available on agency website.

Mutual support groups whose members are the spouses/partners of people who have or are at risk of an alcohol use disorder; children of all ages whose parents, guardians or other parent figures are involved in excessive alcohol use; and/or friends of those individuals. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and allow participants to share their experience, strengths and hopes to solve the problems they have in common and support the recovery of their loved one.

Families/Friends of Individuals With an Alcohol Use Disorder Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are the spouses/partners of people who have or are at risk of a drug use disorder; children of all ages whose parents, guardians or other parent figures are involved in drug use; and/or friends of those individuals. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and allow participants to share their experience, strengths and hopes to solve the problems they have in common and support the recovery of their loved one.

Families/Friends of Individuals With a Drug Use Disorder Support Groups

Provides support groups for people experiencing addiction to alcohol, drugs, food, and/or pornography. There are also support groups that deal with anger, depression, grief, and divorce. Also offered is Beyond the Walls, a class for families with loved ones who are incarcerated. Child care is provided for support groups and classes. Also provides a community meal.

Support groups and classes are Christian faith-based healing programs. Worship services are offered, but attendance is not required.

Support Groups offered at Living Hope Church

Provides support for people experiencing distress from the pain of addiction to alcohol, drugs, and/or pornography, as well as support groups dealing with anger, depression, grief, and divorce.

Mutual support groups whose members are people who have a parent or parent figure, child, spouse, partner or other loved one who is serving a sentence in a correctional facility for a criminal offense. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and provide an opportunity for participants to share their experience, strengths and hopes as a means of coping with the impact of imprisonment and the trauma that arrest, separation, public trial and confinement can have on family members.

Families of Inmates Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are people who are having difficulty controlling their compulsive sexual behavior and/or emotional attachments, and spouses, partners or other family members who are involved in relationships with individuals exhibiting this type of behavior. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; provide emotional support, information and resources to help participants avoid destructive sexual behavior and achieve sexual sobriety; and may include faith-based and secular 12-step groups as well as non-12 step groups.

Sexual/Love Addiction Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are individuals who are seeking weight gain or weight loss support. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; provide emotional support, information and resources for those who participate; offer weight loss or weight gain support only, no special diets; and may include faith-based and secular 12-step groups as well as non-12 step groups.

Weight Management Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are adults and/or children who are experiencing the trauma of a divorce or a broken relationship. The groups provide an opportunity for participants to understand their relationships past and present; work through feelings of grief, loss, rejection, guilt and other emotions related to their experience; and gain a sense of their own identity. Meeting formats may include in-person, telephone or Internet options.

Separation/Divorce Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are people who have experienced a loss, such as the death of a loved one, divorce or separation. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; are open to anyone who has had a loss rather than structured for people with particular types of losses; and focus on helping participants accept their loss, express their grief, move through the bereavement process and put their lives back together.

General Bereavement and Grief Support Groups

Programs that provide educational and/or therapeutic opportunities for people who are interested in or who need to learn how to deal with their anger in a positive, functional way. Participants may include people who internalize their anger as well as those who act it out verbally or in behavior toward friends, family, children, employers or other people in their lives. Included are court-ordered and voluntary programs for people who are involved in domestic violence or child abuse as well as general workshops for people who are uncomfortable with the way they express their anger.
