Drop-In Day Center offered by YWCA Seattle King Snohomish Angeline's Center for Homeless Women

Provides drop-in day services for homeless and low-income women; no children. Offers hygiene facilities, laundry and showers, health care and mental health counseling, access to phones and computers, and daily meals.

Public or private organizations that provide showers, baths or other facilities where homeless people, travelers and others who do not have access to private bathing facilities can wash. Included are permanent shower facilities as well as mobile installations that can be moved from place to place. Also included are organizations that provide vouchers that people can use to access bathing facilities.

Public Showers/Baths

Public or private facilities for washing, drying and ironing clothes that are available to homeless people, travelers and other individuals who do not have access to private laundry facilities.

Laundry Facilities

Programs that make computers, printers and other electronic equipment available for public use, primarily for word processing, spread sheets and other document development applications. Public access computers can be found in libraries, schools, government buildings, science labs and research centers. Some companies such as Mail Boxes Etc. provide computers the public can use for an hourly fee.

Public Access Computers/Tools

Public or private organizations that provide toilet facilities that are available to the public or which coordinate the distribution of portable toilets to parks or other areas for public events.

Public Restrooms

Programs that pay for or provide soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, combs, brushes, cotton swabs, deodorant, facial tissue, toilet paper and other personal hygiene/grooming supplies for homeless people and other individuals who need them.

Personal/Grooming Supplies

Programs that provide an alternative, nonresidential environment for people who have mental, emotional or social problems and which may offer recreational activities, socialization, individual or group counseling, mutual support group meetings, information and referral or other similar services. Included are centers that are staffed by consumers of psychiatric services as well as centers that are managed by professional staff.

Mental Health Drop In Centers

Programs that provide access to a telephone for homeless people and others who need to make a call and are unable to pay for it.

Telephone Facilities

Centers where homeless people can spend time during the day or evening. Services may include counseling and/or medication monitoring on a formal or informal basis; personal hygiene supplies; facilities for showering, shaving, napping, laundering clothes, making necessary telephone calls or attending to other personal needs; and other basic supportive services. Some centers may also provide meals or facilities for cooking. Programs that focus on homeless youth may provide case management, living skills training, family reunification assistance, classes and other educational supports, pre-employment training, health education (including HIV prevention), help in obtaining valid ID and other services that help youth successfully exit street life and transition to independent living.

Homeless Drop In Centers

Programs offered by churches, restaurants and other organizations that provide meals in a central location for people who lack the resources needed to buy and prepare food. The food may be distributed to people who line up for the meal or may be served to people seated in a dining hall setting, and participants rarely need to establish eligibility for the service.

Soup Kitchens

Programs, often offered by libraries, cyber cafes, and a variety of other government, nonprofit or proprietary organizations, that provide on-site Internet-enabled computers for public access.

Public Internet Access Sites

Provides a drop-in center serving hot breakfast and lunches, access to phones and computers, and recreational activities such as art therapy, games, and video-based media. Also provides clothing, showers, mail services, and hygiene supplies. Guests have access to laundry services, massages, acupuncture, foot care, and haircuts on a sign-up basis.

HIV Services offered by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon at HIV Day Center

Operates a drop-in center for people living with HIV/AIDS. Offers hot breakfast and lunches, access to phones and computers, and recreational activities such as art therapy, games, and video-based media. Also provides clothing, showers, mail services, and hygiene supplies.

Programs that provide an alternative, non-residential environment that people with any of a variety of issues can visit on an informal basis to find mutual support and access to social and recreational activities. People can drop by whenever they like without the need to make an appointment and have the option of participating in whatever activities are currently underway.

Drop In Centers

Programs, often available through senior centers, neighborhood centers, homeless shelters or  drop in centers, or other similar organizations, that offer the on-site services of beauticians, barbers and/or manicurists for people who need to have their hair or nails done. Services may include hair coloring treatment, permanent waves, haircuts, shaves, wash and sets, manicures and cosmetic pedicures which improve the appearance of the feet and toenails. Also included are programs that provide haircuts for homeless people, children from low-income families returning to school and other targeted individuals.

Hair and Nail Care

Programs that organizes suppers, lunches or other get-togethers that give community residents an opportunity to meet one another in a friendly and informal atmosphere while sharing a meal. Community meals are generally sponsored by churches, libraries and other local community organizations and coordinated by volunteers.

Community Meals

Programs that provide an address for individuals who have no permanent residence and who need an address to apply for public assistance, or for travelers who need a place where mail can be sent.

Temporary Mailing Address

Programs that provide classes, individual lessons or other opportunities for people who want to learn or perfect their skills and techniques in any of a variety of visual art forms or crafts.

Arts and Crafts Instruction

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services for individuals who have diseases of or injuries to the feet. Conditions treated may include bacterial and fungal infections, skin and nail disorders, benign and cancerous tumors, congenital and acquired foot deformities and foot problems caused by illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular diseases. Treatment includes use of surgical procedures, casting or other forms of immobilization and the prescription of corrective devices, oral and locally injected medication and physical therapy. Included are services provided by podiatrists, chiropodists and other foot care specialists. Foot care may also be provided by nurses. Podiatrists are health professional specialists with a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree.

Podiatry/Foot Care

Programs that provide clothing for people who need it. Available items depend on what has been donated and is on hand at any given time. The collection may include but does not specialize in children's clothes, work clothes, maternity clothes and shoes.

General Clothing Provision

Programs that produce regional anesthesia, eliminate or reduce pain or treat other health problems by passing long needles through the skin to specific points. The free ends of the needles are twirled or in some cases used to conduct a weak electrical current to increase stimulation at the desired point. In some cases moxibustion is used in combination with traditional acupuncture to enhance the treatment. Moxibustion involves the burning of dried herbs (mugwort) at or near specific acupuncture points or whole areas of the body. Benefits come both from the heat of the smoldering leaves and from the nature of the herb itself.

Acupuncture

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the organized recreational activity, sport or game of their choice. These programs may be offered by local clubs devoted to a particular activity or sport; may provide individual or team coaching assistance or instruction, access to equipment and facilities, and uniforms, if necessary; and may sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in amateur competitions, usually at the local, regional or state level, and provide officials for games. These events are generally for the enjoyment of the athletes and are not at a high enough competitive level to be considered spectator sports.

Recreational Activities/Sports

Career information and job search assistance is available through individual counseling and workshops.  Career information includes self-assessment and career opportunities. Job Search assistance includes information on applications, interviews, and resume/letter writing.  The Resource Room has a Career Information Library, Job Search Videos, computers, several computer assisted programs, and Internet access for job searches.

Employment - Assistance/Military Personnel offered at Fleet and Family Support - Snohomish County

Career information and job search assistance is available through individual counseling and workshops.  Career information includes self-assessment and career opportunities.

Programs that provide instruction for people who need to acquire the basic "soft skills" and tools that are required to successfully apply for and secure employment, and retain a position once they have been hired. These programs provide information and guidance regarding preparing a resume, writing job application letters, completing job application questionnaires, responding to job ads and taking employment tests; offer tips regarding appropriate dress, personal appearance and interview techniques; and address other similar topics.

Prejob Guidance

Libraries or other organizations that maintain collections of movies, documentaries and other subjects in videotape and/or DVD format that can be used with library equipment or checked out for viewing at home or shown to community groups.

Videotape/DVD Collections

Programs that provide information and guidance for people who need to evaluate their aptitude, abilities and interests in order to choose a vocation or career and select the type of training that will enable them to obtain and progress in positions in the public or private sector that are productive and fulfilling.

Career Counseling

Programs that maintain listings of available employment opportunities and assign a staff member to help people who are searching for a position to choose and obtain the most suitable option.

Job Search/Placement

Libraries that maintain reference desks in adult and/or children's sections or telephone reference services to help users to find the information or leisure reading material they need. Reference librarians provide assistance in locating information on a wide variety of topics such as business, current events, statistics and research findings, and civil service exams. Also included are readers advisory services.

Reference/Information

Programs that administer tests which measure an individual's skills, abilities, interests, personality traits and other attributes for success in different occupational areas or specific positions. Also included are programs that allow people to "try out" jobs in the community for short periods of time to determine whether there is a fit and, in the case of people with disabilities, to determine the type of supports the individual might require to succeed if hired for that type of job.

Vocational Assessment

Libraries or other organizations that provide online resources and/or search services for people who want to access a  wide range of digital information, materials, and services. A physical location such as a library may offer access to digitized content locally at a facility or remotely from any location online. Digital materials may include e-books, multimedia, digitized versions of articles and information from print sources such as magazines, newspapers, journals and reference books as well as music and other content.  Examples of digital service platforms and vendors include OCLC's (Online Computer Library Center) FirstSearch collection of databases, the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE, the U.S. Department of Education's ERIC, LexisNexis, ProQuest, Ebsco and Gale/Cengage.
